COVID Case Management

Thank you for an outstanding start to the school year. The following information will provide you the district’s current plan for managing COVID-19 cases as we continue to monitor local health within our community.

Our Board’s stated position regarding the recommendations below continues to be that parents, students, and staff will, in consultation with family physicians, make their own decisions regarding vaccinations and masks.

As of today, 6 students or staff have tested positive for COVID-19 since school began on August 19.  It is one of our district’s top priorities to keep students and staff in school every day; therefore, the following Ohio Guidelines for K-12 Classrooms is in the district’s current point-of-reference in terms of positive COVID-19 cases:

  • Please do not send your student to school ill. Screen your student for any COVID-19 symptoms and keep your student home with ANY symptoms.
  • Students/Staff testing positive for COVID-19 will be permitted to report to school after 10 days from the date of the positive test or the onset of symptoms.  Alternatively, the individual may return to school upon obtaining a physician’s clearance.
  • Students/Staff determined to be in close contact with a person that tested positive for COVID-19:
    • If the individual is vaccinated, the individual should wear a mask indoors for 14 days OR until they receive a negative viral (PCR or antigen) test performed 3-5 days after exposure. Vaccinated individuals can remain in the normal in-person classroom setting and participate in extracurricular and sport activities as long as they have no symptoms. If they test positive, they should isolate for at least 10 days from the date of the positive test.
    • If the individual is not vaccinated, the individual should not attend in-person school or participate in sports or extracurricular activities for up to 10 days. In these cases, individuals can return to school and extracurricular activities after 7 days if they have received a negative viral (PCR or antigen) test that was performed at least 5 days after exposure. If, however, the individual tests COVID-positive, they are to be isolated for at least 10 days from the date of the positive test per the second bullet above.
    • Students will be considered in close contact if it is determined they have been within 3 feet of someone who tested positive for a total of 15 minutes without an appropriate facial covering.
Per federal mandate regarding transportation, face coverings/masks continue to be required for all riders and drivers on busses for all school activities (Federal Mandate).

As a community, let’s mitigate the spread of coronavirus by following the following recommended protocols by the Center for Disease Control (CDC):

  • Vaccinate if you are eligible.  Contact Lake County General Health District or a local pharmacy for an appointment. Note:  On 8/23/21, the Pfizer vaccine has obtained full approval from the FDA for ages 16 & up.
  • Adhere to social distancing recommendations
  • Stay home if you are not feeling well or are symptomatic
  • Wear face coverings while indoors if you are able
  • Quarantine if you have been exposed to a positive case

The health and safety of our students and staff continues to be our number one priority. When adjustments need to be made due to changing conditions, we will promptly communicate with you. As always, thank you for your support and commitment to the Perry Local Schools.
