Philip Herrick, Class of 1967
Philip John Herrick, 71, of Modesto, CA, passed away in the comfort of his home on April 17, 2021. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 5th from 5:30 - 7:00 pm at Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines, IA. A funeral service will be held the following day, Thursday, May 6th at 11 am at Iles Westover Chapel, followed by a graveside service at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, IA at 12:30 pm.
Philip was born April 20,1949 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Bobby Lee and Marjorie (Johnson) Herrick. He graduated from Perry High School in 1967 and graduated Evangel College, Springfield, MO with a Bachelor of Science in 1972. He later obtained a Master of Science in Education in 1996 at Drake University, Des Moines, IA. He was united in marriage to Linda Jean Phillips on May 30,1970.
He joined the Navy and went to Officer Training School in Newport, RI. After his commissioning, he was assigned to the USS Ware in Mayport , FL. He was released from active duty in 1975 and joined the reserves. During his summer reserve duties, he taught at the Naval School, San Diego. After 22 years of service, he retired with the rank of Lt. Commander. He was recalled to active duty in 1990 to serve in the Gulf War.
He began his teaching career in 1976 teaching chemistry at Bridgewater-Fontanelle, IA. He taught high school math and science over 40 years and retired in 2021. Schools he taught at were Des Moines Christian School, IA Christian Academy, and he was the Principal at Fox Valley High School. He finished his teaching career at Oakdale High School in Oakdale, CA.
He enjoyed golfing, coaching and watching soccer. He spent one week each summer at a summer camp for abused children called Royal Family Kid's Camps. He loved to travel and check out new places. He enjoyed teaching Sunday School and attended The House Modesto in Modesto, CA.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Herrick, Modesto, CA; son, Christopher (Brenee) Herrick, Urbandale, IA; daughter, Kara Herrick, Modesto, CA; and grandchildren: Jacob, Lukas, and Ashton; brother, Michael (Dawn) Herrick, Perrysburg, OH; sister, Marcia (Clyde) Christian; sister-in-law Dorothy (Steve) Handy; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
