Robert J. “Barn” Advey, Class of 1964

Robert J. “Barn” Advey age 75 of Andover passed away on Saturday, May, 22nd at Austinburg Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Austinburg, Ohio after a lengthy illness.Bob was born on February 12, 1946 in Painesville Ohio to Robert J. and Ruth Ann (Alden) Advey, growing up as the oldest of 13 siblings.A 1964 Graduate of Perry High School, he attended Kent State University and graduated from Lake Erie College with a Bachelor of Arts in History. Bob taught history at Harvey High School, Riverside High School and Pymatuning Valley High School. After a few years of teaching, Bob made the decision to pivot into the insurance business as an agent. He first joined Associates Diversified Services, Inc. with Dan O'Malley and Mark Frank, then formed Robert Thomas Insurance Agency, Inc. with Tom Kinkade. Bob spent the last few years of his career as the owner of Robert Advey Insurance Agency, Inc. before retiring and selling his business in 2011.It was important for Bob to give back to the communities that supported his business. He was a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters, Andover Rotary Club, serving as president from 1987-1988, Andover Area Chamber of Commerce and Andover Eagles #4035. He was one of the founders of the Pymatuning Area Industrial Development Corporation and Andover Kiwanis Club. Bob was proud of his service on the Andover Village Council, from 1985 through 1993. Among many accomplishments on the Council, Bob was especially proud of spearheading repair projects for the sidewalks in the Village in the mid-1980’s so people could safely use the sidewalks again.With a lifelong love of history, Bob enjoyed reading and listening to audio books, perennial and vegetable gardening with his wife Linda and cooking. Bob put his creative mind to work with his writing and commentary authoring "Advocations" article for several years in the Pymatuning Area News (Precursor to The News). Growing up working and playing on his grandparents’ golf course, Bob loved the game. He could be found on the golf course regularly, seldom passed up the opportunity to spend an afternoon in friendly competition with his friends and brothers on one of the many courses in Northeast Ohio or Northwest Pennsylvania.Bob loved the game of baseball and the Cleveland Indians. Having seasons tickets with two brothers and friends for the last few seasons at Municipal Stadium then moving to Gateway and Jacobs Field for several years watching the Tribe plow thru MLB Teams in what was an amazing run. Bob was an avid Fantasy Baseball League team owner for many years with great success.Bob is survived by his wife of 48 years Linda (Bean), Children Michelle, Audra (Billy Elliot) and Alex (Joey Barker). Grandchildren Kaelyn, Ian, Paxton and Liam. Sisters Ruth Mulcahy, Laura (Tom) Corrigan, Mari Shanti, Rita (Dennis) Kohr, Becky (Rich) Merkosky. Brothers Larry (Sarah Sample), Don (Sue), Ron (Kris), Doug (Maggie) and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Charlie, Tom & Jack.Celebration of Life picnic was held with family and friends.
